The Homeschool Herald is a wonderful group of creative people, all joining together to make a newspaper. Being part of the HH has been a highlight for me and many others. As a Homeschool Herald leader, I wanted to create a source for anyone in the Herald, new or seasoned, to look at for help. You will learn what we expect of all our staff, how to receive important information, and how to add your amazing contributions.
Expectations:
We are so happy to have you join! Joining the Homeschool Herald means committing to making something monthly to add to the paper. It is ok to miss a month, but adding to the HH is what all the fun is about! In order for the leaders to have enough time to get everything done on the back end, we ask that you respect the deadlines you commit to. If you can’t make it, you will roll over into the next publishing date. All dates will be available through our Discord.
Discord and Communication:
Being part of Discord is a crucial step to joining the HH. We post all deadlines for publishing, in-person meet-up details, and it is where all our business meetings will be held. If you as a staff member cannot be on it personally, a parent can join instead.
Discord is a messaging app where only people you invite can talk to you. Only approved staff will have access to the group chat.
Meetings:
You can expect two types of meetings when joining the Homeschool Herald:
The first kind is our monthly business meetings, where we will discuss deadlines for the upcoming month, answer any questions relating to that publishing period, and go over any themes. If it is around a holiday, we may have more holiday-related contributions, but it is not required. All business meetings are held through Discord.
The second type is our in-person get-togethers. These are where you can talk to friends and hang out with like-minded creators. Locations for these meetings vary.
Submission Basics:
When you join our group, we will send you an email for our website. This will lead you to create an account and is how you add your contributions, whether that’s writing, photography, or art. If you can’t find this email, check your junk or spam folders.
Keep in mind this link will expire after a few days, so be sure to create your account once you receive the email. Through your account, you can create drafts where you add what you would like to post, and leaders will come in and make them public when it is time. I will create a separate, more in-depth post about how WordPress, our website, works soon.
