On Thursday, January 23rd, IAHE hosted a homeschool day at the capitol in the Indiana State Capitol! Day at the Capitol is an annual event that homeschool families can attend to learn more about what’s going on with homeschooling state wide, and to learn more about the capitol. The attendees had the chance to go on Statehouse and State Library tours throughout the day, as well as sit in on the Senate Session. IAHE also hosted a rally during midday, where everyone gathered to listen to a couple of different speakers, namely:
- Senator Raatz
- Treasurer Daniel Elliot
- Chaplain Matthew Barnes
- Representative Ethan Lawson
- Kylene Varner, IAHE Action Legislative Liaison
There was a grand turnout of 578 people in all that came to IAHE Day at the Capitol. So many families had the opportunity to learn about how our system of government works, and see the Senate actually at work, debating, failing, and passing bills. Attendees also had the chance to write letters to their legislators (representatives and senators), thanking them for what they do, and asking them to continue to protect our right of freedom to homeschool.
Attendees also had a fun visit from Abraham Lincoln, who came to talk about his childhood growing up in Indiana, and the importance of the Bible and Constitution in guiding our country.
Kylene Varner talked to the attendees during the rally about upcoming legal decisions that are going to be made concerning our freedom to homeschool, as well as certain bills that have been or are going to be presented to the House and Senate that also have to do with possibly altering our freedom to homeschool. Kylene helped enlighten hundreds of homeschoolers as to the types of bills that are being presented in our legislature and how to keep an eye out for them and fight against or support them if the need arises.
A strong message was shared throughout the day about the importance of homeschool freedom in Indiana. All in all, it was a great time for families to spend time together and learn more about the government that God has instituted among us.
